Friday

The stage was set for this year's Necronomicon GT - my tickets were bought, the hotel rooms booked, and a slew of fellow Warmongers were set to accompany me down for a weekend of gaming and boozing. Only 3 of us were there for Fantasy this year, so we each had to pull our weight, else our club mates would flog us. (Well, really they'd just flog Rob and I; Kevin's got gunz.)

A statistic: 1 out of every 2 Warmongers is retarded.

Then there's Kevin:

Several of my cohorts chided that I had better take the big win. While winning overall would be great, I think expecting more than a top 10 finish is a setup for disappointment due to the sheer randomness of factors involved at any tournament. That said, my mental goal going into this tournament was simple: have a much better time than last year, take in the experience, and finish in the top 25% (ideally the top 10). Last year I had spent not one, but two entire nights up painting my army. While I still a good time, I was operating at the mental capacity of a small marsupial. This year I made sure I had everything done before takeoff, and other than adding some sporadic reeds, I was confident that my list was tight and my army was ready to go. Bring on the booze.

We arrived at a gorgeous venue, and I was instantly grateful I had time to kill.

My army list:

  • Oldblood: full kit, a new pair of sneakers
  • Scar Vet BSB on Cold One - a mighty sword
  • Scar Vet General - a shiny shield & pretty axe
  • Skink Priest - two copies of Star magazine (TomKat is to be cloned!; Brangelina kidnapped a black baby!)
  • 10 Saurus
  • 10 Saurus
  • 10 Saurus
  • 10 Skinks w/ Pipes
  • 10 Skinks w/ Pipes
  • 10 Skinks w/ Javelins
  • 3 Kroxigors
  • 3 Kroxigors
  • 3 Terradons
  • 3 Terradons
  • 3 Salamanders
  • Stegadon

In all its marshy glory:

I'd been playing my army for almost a year to date, and its come a long way from where it started (which, coincidentally, was pretty much right at last year's Necro!). This finalized version is pretty capable in most matchups, and I feel that any shortcomings are, at this point, my own rather than the list's. It's very mobile, very fighty, and has made for consistently fun, engaging games. I've found it surprisingly rewarding on the table, especially as it's a none too common build.

Optimistic start:

After a night of knocking a few back, laughing at Cort and Pete's volume of yet accomplished painting, and a half-hearted attempt at making reeds, I managed a decent night's sleep before the brutal 7:30 wake-up. I gathered up my kit and headed down with the lads, set up my display base, which was awkward at first since I trimmed it down for the flight, and checked out my match up.
